Still In The Hunt At Winter Heat

Mooresville, NC

After all the battles and twice being taken out of races by lapped traffic on the CMS 1/5 mile oval, Ryan Mackintosh is still alive in the hunt for the INEX Winter Heat title.

Two top five finishes, 2nd and 4th, in the last two events have set him up to have a shot at the title.  The Amherst, Nova Scotia driver would need a top 3 finish and need to get some help behind him.  It appears to be quite a long shot but the Mackintosh is pleased to still be chasing the top spot after seven events, three on the oval and four on the road course.

The scheduled race likely will be moved to Sunday with weather forecaster calling for a rain snow mix in the Charlotte area on Saturday.

Mackintosh Grabs a 2nd and 4th at Winter Heat

Chris Woods Racing Co-owner Christi Woods and Ryan Mackintosh enjoy a moment in the pits after bringing home second place.

Charlotte Motor Speedway played host to two rounds of the Winter Heat at its roadcourse.  The weather cooperated and the Chris Woods Racing - Scotia Hyundai Bandolero grabbed two top 5s on the day.

The first feature had Mackintosh start 3rd after moving up from 8th in the heat.  The #03 car, driven by Mackintosh, battled in the early laps with Reid Wilson and John Holleman before digging in an attempt to run down the leader Austin Lagenstein.  The 7 car held off Mackintosh on the final two laps to take the win.

In the second feature Mackintosh started 8th after some bad luck in the qualifying heats.  The #03 car made its way through the pack up to third and battled the 4 car of John Holleman the entire race before having to settle for 4th place in the 18 car field.

Mackintosh will be back in action next Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The only thing that might slow down the Scotia Hyundai Bandolero could be the weather.

Current forecasts in North Carolina are showing 30% chance of rain for Friday and 60% likelihood on Sunday.

Some Good and Some Bad

Charlotte, North Carolina

An oil covered track led to the lead pack of 5 cars coming together half way through the first lap on the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course.  The #24 Scotia Hyundai Bandolero had worked its way from 10th to 5th in the first 6 turns but was collected in the pile up.

Mackintosh was able to continue and limp the car home in 12th position.  The finish is not what was expected after being in the top five on the speed charts in practice on Friday.

The good that came out of the tough day was that all the cars Mackintosh was chasing in the standings did not complete the race due to damage or mechanical difficulty.

Sunday's scheduled race was rained out and will be scheduled for next week as part of a Winter Heat double header.

Speedbowl Wild 'n Wacky Wednesday 8/26 Results

Waterford, CT

Waterford Speedbowl completed its Wild 'n Wacky race program with a host of repeat winners and one new face in Victory Lane. The first champion of the 2009 Wild n Wacky Wednesday season was also determined.

Dennis Pantani of Branford jumped from his third starting position to lead the first eight laps of the Legends Car event. Teenagers Alessandro Vitelli of Woodbridge and Tony Flannery of East Hampton moved in behind intent on being factors in the 20-lap race. Flannery used an inside move on Pantani to move to the race lead on lap nine.

Jason Palmer, the big winner in the Legends Car division this year, moved up from his eleventh place starting position into second behind Flannery on lap 10. He made an outside bid for the lead on lap 13. The pair spent two laps battling for the lead before Palmer moved ahead for good.

Caution waved for the only time as the leaders rounded turn four to the white flag, setting up a green white checkered finish. Flannery made a run for it, spending a lap outside Palmer. But the Berlin competitor moved on to win his seventeenth race of the year. Carl Blandina of Milford came on strong at the end to finish third over Vitelli, with New Jersey competitor Roger Coss finishing fifth.

With the win, Palmer's dominating season has propelled him to the Wednesday Legends Car points title. He holds greater than a 100-point advantage over Flannery with two points events remaining. The championship is his third consecutive Wild n Wacky Wednesday title in the Legends Cars.

Onie Pierce of Norwich took the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap X-Car race but the field only completed two laps before several competitors got together in the top five off turn two. The incident collected Pierce, James Tirrell of Stonington, Dan Madore of Sterling, Mike Marvin of Colchester, and Tom Johnston of Westerly.

Mike Trask, racing out of Plainfield, moved to the lead when action resumed. Trask was impressive until caution waved again on lap 11 for a spin in turn four. Trask had a host of top runners behind him for the restart including Dan D'addario of Columbia and points leader Patrick Williams of Middletown, both moving into the top three. A several lap battle up front shook out with D'addario moving to the lead on lap 15 and Williams following past Trask. Caution waved for the final time on lap 18 setting up a green white checkered flag finish.

Trask took a look three wide when the green waved, but it was a side by side battle to checkered flag between D'addario, seeking his first career win, and Williams. Williams prevailed in the high line to win by a half car length and keep his points lead on solid ground. Trask took third, with Rich Hurne of Groton and Brad Voglesong of Middletown completing the top five.

Hometown driver Al Potter moved out to a straightaway lead over the first half of the Super X-Car race as the field raced under green flag conditions. Last week's winner Steve LaRose methodically moved through the field into the second position when caution came out for a two car fracas on lap 12 of the 20-lapper.

The field went three wide on the restart into turn one as James Consalvo, who had moved into third, looked under both Potter and LaRose. Potter managed to hold off both competitors and the trio continued to wage a great battle for the lead. Caution came out again with just five laps remaining for fluid through turn four.

Potter and LaRose were glued together for the final five entertaining circuits around the Bowl. Griswold driver LaRose was using the outside groove to inch ahead. Potter, seeking his first win in a couple seasons, was holding the bottom doing a veteran job at keeping his shot at the win intact.

Potter held the advantage out of turn two of the final lap, but LaRose rebounded out of turn four to win the event by just a few feet over Potter. Mike Caprio of New Haven was third, Charles Beal of Ledyard fourth, and points leader John Yagmin of Tolland ended up fifth.

Paul French of Andover backed up last week's X-Modified win with his second consecutive 15-lap event win. He led the duration of the caution free race. Dean Christensen of Granby and Dave Flammia Jr. of Waterbury rounded out the top three.

Ryan Mackintosh of Nova Scotia passed Matt Carpenter of Auburn, MA on lap four to win the 10-lap Bandolero race, his second of the year at the Speedbowl in as many starts.

Nicole Harris of Groton won the 8-lap Women on Wheels event and Troy Marvin bested the field of spectator drag racers in the HDRA 100' eliminations.
